Smith Bros. family innovation and patents

The Smith family has been quite inventive over the years. As they moved from a family that fished... to one that integrated a vertical empire around fish (from the catching, processing, wholesale, retail and restaurants)... they faced problems that had not yet been solved. As the idiom goes "Necessity is the mother of invention."

These patents where found by searching Google Patents. If you find a patent that has been missed, please let me know.

As a related note the various Smith Bros. logos were also granted as a Service Marks by the USA government.

Comments by Virginia Haack (was Smith)
For the planker invention I remember Evelyn Smith experimenting with different kinds of hardwoods to see which worked the best with the size of the "expanded metal" frame. And which one would resisting burning the best. I think oak was chosen. We soaked the planks in oil. The size of the frame she ordered from a tool and die person had to be the right size for the serving size she specified 8 oz, but not thicker than 1 inch. Trout worked better than Whitefish. Salmon the best. That is why a "bread dressing" was used at first,.to fill the spaces.

In California we were not allowed to use leftover rolls for dressing, croutons, or anything.

She was also interested in designing a shrimp de-veining machine, better than the one we had worked on, which was not 100% successful. By the time we got to California, shrimp was 'graded by size' and farm raised, and starved the last few weeks of their life which elliminated that ugly "black line".
